Aviva Investors has launched a tokenized share class for its £22 billion ($29.4 billion) Sterling Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger. The UK-based asset management arm of Aviva plc seeded the new offering with a £50 million ($66 million) internal investment on Monday, October 26, 2026.[1][2][3]

The move expands a partnership with Ripple that began earlier this year and marks the firm's second live tokenized fund. Combined with a US dollar liquidity fund share class introduced in July, Aviva now manages more than £86 million ($116 million) across its tokenized offerings.[2][3]

This rapid expansion cements the firm as one of Europe's largest providers of tokenized money market funds. While the £50 million initial allocation represents a fraction of the broader £22 billion sterling fund, the deployment signals a definitive shift toward live institutional production.[2]

Bridging traditional and digital infrastructure

Rather than migrating the entire £22 billion portfolio onto a distributed ledger, Aviva is employing a digital twin structure. The underlying fund, established in 2002, continues to operate off-chain, investing in high-grade, short-term debt instruments denominated in British pounds.[3]

First launched in 2002, the Sterling Liquidity Fund serves as a foundational cash management tool for corporate treasurers and institutional investors. It targets low-risk returns by carefully managing duration and credit risk in the British short-term debt markets.[3]

The initial £50 million investment represents a fraction of the broader £22 billion sterling fund.

The blockchain tokens serve as a digital representation of ownership shares in that conventional fund. They are issued specifically for eligible institutional investors operating qualified digital wallets, bridging the gap between decentralized networks and traditional financial plumbing.[3]

This dual-track approach allows the tokenized share class to retain the exact same investment objective, risk profile, and daily liquidity characteristics as the traditional fund. Crucially, it also preserves the fund's regulatory status as an Ireland-domiciled UCITS vehicle.[3]

The Central Bank of Ireland previously approved Aviva's dollar-denominated tokenized fund. That decision established a regulatory precedent, allowing European asset managers to issue digital shares without sacrificing conventional investor protections or violating strict jurisdictional mandates.[2]

The operational architecture relies on a consortium of specialized financial entities. The Bank of New York Mellon continues to serve as the traditional custodian, holding the underlying physical debt assets securely off-chain.[2][3]

On the digital side, institutional crypto custodian Komainu secures the blockchain-based shares. Meanwhile, Licuido provides the digital infrastructure required to issue, manage, and trade the tokenized real-world assets across the distributed network.[2][3]

The XRP Ledger's institutional pivot

Aviva selected the XRP Ledger as its foundational blockchain, leaning on Ripple's enterprise infrastructure for issuance and settlement. Since its launch in 2012, the decentralized network has processed more than 4 billion transactions.[3]

The XRP Ledger was selected for its enterprise infrastructure and energy-efficient consensus mechanism.

The ledger currently supports nearly 8 million active wallets and is maintained by more than 130 independent validators. It utilizes a consensus mechanism that does not require energy-intensive mining, aligning with the environmental mandates of major European asset managers.[3]

Ripple executives view the Aviva deployment as a validation of the network's capacity to handle regulated financial instruments. The ledger provides the specific privacy, security, and compliance controls that institutional issuers require to operate within strict European frameworks.[2]

Financial institutions are increasingly adopting infrastructure designed for continuous access and faster settlement, said Nigel Khakoo, Senior Vice President of Trading and Markets at Ripple. He noted that the launch demonstrates how these capabilities function in live production.[2]

The XRP Ledger is increasingly positioning itself as a primary settlement layer for tokenized real-world assets. According to industry data, the network currently secures hundreds of millions in total distributed asset value.

Aviva's £50 million injection immediately boosts the network's standing against competing blockchains like Ethereum and Polygon. The race to capture institutional tokenization volume has intensified as traditional finance firms increasingly demand enterprise-grade infrastructure.

The race for tokenized liquidity

Money market funds have emerged as the primary testing ground for institutional tokenization. Because they offer stable yields and high liquidity, they serve as an ideal digital cash equivalent for institutional investors navigating decentralized finance ecosystems.[3]

Tokenization allows asset managers to offer instantaneous, round-the-clock settlement.

Traditional fund settlement typically operates on a delayed timeline, meaning trades take one to two business days to finalize. By tokenizing these shares, asset managers can offer instantaneous, round-the-clock settlement.[2]

This real-time mobility allows institutional investors to move capital immediately during weekends or outside of standard banking hours. It is particularly valuable for meeting sudden margin calls or executing complex cross-border collateral transfers without delay.[2]

Mark Versey, Chief Executive Officer of Aviva Investors, emphasized that upgrading financial market plumbing is no longer a theoretical exercise. We believe tokenised funds can increase efficiency and ultimately lead to improved client outcomes, Versey stated.[2][3]

The broader asset management industry is closely monitoring these dual-currency deployments. The success of Aviva's sterling and dollar liquidity funds will likely dictate how quickly other European insurers transition their own multi-billion-dollar portfolios onto distributed ledgers.[1][2]

Despite these operational milestones, the scale of adoption remains in its infancy. The next critical threshold for the tokenization sector will be proving that these digital share classes can attract significant external capital beyond the asset managers' own seed investments.[1][2]

Key points
